Facilitative Model

A Model for Facilitation, Negotiation and Mediation Discussions

Informed Consent as to Process (the process is always negotiable)

Sharing of Perspectives (allow each participant to say their piece, to a balanced extent, without interruption)

Identification of Common Interests, Interdependence and Easy Points of Agreement (there will always be some)

Identification of Problem Solving Agenda (issues are stated as joint problems to be solved for the future, such as: “how can we best . . .” or “what is the best way for us to . . .”)

Identification of Desired Information and Documentation (each participant should feel free to request desired information. If participants cannot agree on information sharing, agreement as to process may be lost and, as the participants desire, discussions may end)

Identification of Desired Outcomes and Interests (what are the participants hoping to satisfy)

Development of Options (develop all possible option and separate from the evaluation process)

Selection from Among Options (to the extent that they satisfy desires and can be explained as positive, adaptive choices, considering the alternative(s)).

Integration (can the agreement be made any better in a way that might be acceptable to all parties?)

Finalization (drafting, review, revision, implementation)
